Convicted murderer of Winfield Scott Goss. The pair conspired and faked Goss' death for an insurance claim outside of Baltimore, Maryland. To prevent his partner-in-crime from spoiling the scheme, Udderzook murdered Goss in Chester County. A spectacular trial followed, with a legal first: it was the first time a photograph was used as evidence in court to prove the identity of a man. Udderzook was found guilty of murder and hanged in West Chester on November 12, 1874.
Veteran of the Civil War: Second Sergeant, 2nd Regiment, Maryland Eastern Shore Infantry.
