Jane Margaret Johnston
September 2, 1951 - April 13, 2012
Jane passed away unexpectedly on April 13, 2012 at the age of 60. She and her identical twin sister Jean were born on September 2, 1951 to parents Dennis and Maryellen Tally. The "Tally Twins," along with their brothers Larry and Chris, were raised in Tracy and graduated from Tracy High School in 1969.
While Jane and her husband Tom grew up on the same street together in Tracy - Coolidge Avenue, it was at a golf class at Delta Community College where sparks first flew. They were married on September 10, 1972. Together for nearly 40 years, they raised two daughters, Jill and Laurie. Jane enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom when her daughters were young, and it was during this time that she finished her college education - earning a degree in Communications from California State University, Stanislaus. Jane and her family enjoyed annual camping trips to Yosemite and vacations to Hawaii and Europe. Jane loved family traditions, and always made holidays special for her family.
The biggest joy in Jane's life was her family, and she loved spending time with her husband and children. Jane and Tom were blessed in the last three years with four grandchildren - Cole, Logan, Stella Jane and Lucas. She adored her grandbabies and eagerly shared pictures and stories about them with her many friends. Jane was a "hands on" Grandma who loved chasing her grandchildren around the house, reading to them and spending quiet time rocking them to sleep. Her grandchildren returned her love and always lit up when Grandma Jane was by their side. Jane loved to be busy, and in addition to spending time with her family and working, she enjoyed golfing at Spring Creek Country Club, traveling, reading, and writing.
A devout Christian, Jane was an active member at Modesto Covenant Church. Her love for her family and the knowledge of how blessed she was prompted her to reach out to help homeless families through programs including Family Promise and the Salvation Army. Jane was a mentor to many colleagues and young children, whom she enjoyed tutoring through the Stanislaus Mentoring Program. She was also instrumental in implementing and promoting the Stanislaus County "Choose Civility" initiative.
For nearly 20 years Jane worked at the Stanislaus County Office of Education, most recently as Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services. She served as advisor to the superintendent in the overall planning and direction of the County Office functions and services. She also directed the public relations effort of the office, oversaw the student events programs, the Education Foundation, Graphics Department and the Youth Entertainment Stage (YES) Company. Jane was an astute judge of character, quick to recognize potential in others. She had an uncanny ability to get to the heart of an issue quickly, whether work-related or in her personal life. She was a member of the Association of California School Administrators, the Modesto Rotary Club, and the California and National School Public Relations Organizations. Jane also served on the Mocse Supervisory committee and co-chaired the Stanislaus Teacher of the Year Program.
Jane will be greatly missed and is survived by her husband Tom; children Jill and husband Peter Krimmel of San Francisco and Laurie and husband Jonathan Hansen of San Diego; grandchildren Cole Krimmel, Logan Hansen, Stella Jane Krimmel and Lucas Hansen; sister Jean (Bill) Benner; brothers Larry (Sharon) Tally, Chris Tally and Lisa Tally, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jane's life is planned for Wednesday, April 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Big Valley Community Church, 4040 Tully Road in Modesto. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in her memory to the Education Foundation of Stanislaus County, 1100 H Street, Modesto, CA 95354.
