Durlingt the Civil War, Dennie joined Company F, 4th Regiment, Vermont on September 7, 1861 as a commissioned 2nd lieutenant. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in Januayr, 1862. On August 13 the same year, he was promoted to Captain of Co. C. Captain Farr was killed in action at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864
Some sources suggest the memorial in Chesterfield West may be a cenotaph.
However, the Vermont Phoenix, June 2, 1865 reported that his wife's trip to the battle site to recover his body had been successful. It describes her efforts, his funeral,and the re-interment at Chesterfield.
