During the Civil War, Ransom served as a private in Company F of the 1st Vermont Cavalry from October 3, 1861 to December 19, 1862 when he was discharged due to disability. He returned to farming, but in 1864 was drafted into the 1st New Hampshire, where he served as sargent until July 15, 1865.

Some accounts of Ransom's death suggest he died in West Chesterfield, New Hampshire; the obituary published in The Brattleboro Reformer (Brattleboro, Vermont) on August 23, 1920, states he "... died yesterday evening at the Memorial Hospital where he was taken Friday night following injuries he received after falling from a load of hay." His Vermont State Death Certificate confirms he died in Brattleboro, Vermont.
