Erma Irene Hatley
Erma Denker Hardan Hatley passed away quietly on Friday April 5th, 2013 at the age of 94. Erma was born on December 31, 1918 during a blizzard in Straubville, North Dakota to Deidrich and Grace Denker. She moved with her family to Whatcom County at the age of 8, attended Lynden schools and graduated in 1935. After graduation, she attended Bellingham Business School and began her bookkeeping career at Darigold. In 1938, while employed at Darigold, she met and married Jack Hardan and they made their home in North Bellingham. She stayed home to raise her family and in 1952 returned to work at Darigold until she retired in 1983. Erma's lifetime interests included cooking, canning, and sewing. She was active for 75 years in 4-H leadership. Those roles included judging food and clothing exhibits at the Northwest Washington Fair. She was a 50-year member of the WSHCE as well as a 75-year member of the Ten Mile Grange. She helped other community members and organizations selflessly during her life's work. Erma is survived by her daughter Joyce (Don) Smith; her son David (Judi) Hardan; and son-in-law Wayne Cardin. She was preceded in death by her first husband Jack in 1968, second husband Heber in 2004, and daughter Ruth Cardin in 1977. Erma was blessed with 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great granddaughter. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 9, 3:00pm - 7:00pm and Wednesday, April 10, noon to 1:30pm at Moles Farewell Tributes 2039 Main St., Ferndale. A celebration of Erma's life will follow at 1:30pm at Moles with burial immediately following at Woodlawn Cemetery. After the services, the family will be hosting a reception at the home of David and Judi Hardan (412 Clark Court) in Lynden. Memorial donations may be made in Erma's name to the Pennies for Friendship Fund of Washington State Home and Community Educators c/o Joyce Smith PO Box 31757 Bellingham, WA 98228.
