He attended the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, and graduated in 1936. He got his Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture at the University of Michigan, a scholarship at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Fellowship at the Cranbrook Academy of Art.

In World War II, he was Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Naval Intelligence. After the war, he became an Architect who designed over 50 churches and church-related buildings, including St. Michael the Archangel in Greenwich, CT, and Our Lady of the Sea in Stamford, CT. He also designed the Springvale retirement community and its inn located in Croton-on-Hudson, New York; the Vatican Pavilion for the 1964-65 World's Fair in New York; and many projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

[Post-WWII, he changed the spelling of his last name from Lueders to Luders, so it would not appear so German to avoid any backlash or discrimination that would affect his career as an architect.]
