On September 22, 1862, Edson mustered in as a Private in Company C, 3rd Regiment, Vermont Infantry. He was wounded July 4, 1864, and in early 1865 was promoted to Corporal. He transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps February 21, 1865, and mustered out July 8, 1865.
