Jan Marie (Schrik) Young passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, in her home on Camano Island, Wash., with her husband, Richard, and her close friend and hospice caretaker, Kim Roberts, at her side.

She had courageously battled multiple sclerosis for more than a decade, and the last three years had been especially difficult for her. In spite of that, she never complained. She had a strong sense of faith and a multitude of friends and family members who truly loved her.

Jan was born on Oct. 25, 1944, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Albert T. and Betty Schrik. She was raised primarily in Independence, Mo, and spent her adult life in Oklahoma, Washington and northern Virginia.

Education was very important to Jan. She graduated from Northeast High School in Kansas City in 1962 and went on to Southwest Baptist College and the University of Missouri-Columbia. She later received graduate degrees in English literature (Oklahoma City University) and public health administration (University of Oklahoma).

Jan led an interesting life. She was a college teacher, health services professional, editor, antique store owner, world traveler (Cotswold villages were a favorite), and gardener. She was deeply religious, an avid reader, a devoted book club and AAUW member, a lover of the theater (not just Shakespeare!), and music lover (she thought ZZ Top was a great Southern band). Her strong passion for life, delightfully wicked sense of humor, love for friends and family, and keen sense of adventure will be greatly missed.

Jan has greatly affected all of our lives for the better. As her husband, although it grieved me to see her suffer, it truly has been my honor, privilege and number one priority to be with her and help her through all of this.

Jan is preceded in death by her beloved father, Albert T. Schrik.

She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Richard, of the home; son, Bryan Asal of Oklahoma; mother, Betty Schrik of Independence; three brothers, Tom Schrik, Baldwin, Mo., and Al Schrik and David Schrik, both of Independence; four sisters, Suzanne Dryer, Lee's Summit, and Dianne Sallee, Marianne Schrik and Lisa Jones, all of Independence; and many adored nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 22, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 409 N. Liberty St., Independence. Graveside services were at Mount Washington Forever Cemetery, Independence, following the service. A special thanks goes to the wonderful staff and dear friends of Providence Hospice of Snohomish County, Wash
