Anna Laura (Wilburn) Heumphreus, age 90, was born April 3, 1923 in Drexel, Missouri to Elery and Velmar (Warner) Wilburn. She had two brothers- Louis and Jim and a sister Frances.

Ann grew up in and around New Market, Iowa. She graduated from New Market High School in 1941, and shortly after, attended Beautician school in Des Moines, Iowa.

She fell in love with and married Raymond Edward Heumphreus in Troy, Kansas on March 18, 1946. To this union was born one daughter RaeAnn on April 7, 1947.

Ann was a "Beauty Operator" in New Market and Clarinda, Iowa for 28 years. People still tell her family to this day how wonderful she was at the career she took so very much pride in.

She found true value in her relationships with her classmates, customers, and dear friends and family. She found joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved collecting pictures of them and keeping those around her up-to-date on everything they were doing.

Ann was a true "American". She took pride in her country and being a lifelong member of the local American Legion Auxiliary, where she held many offices and was known to most in Clarinda as the "Poppy Lady".

She was famous for her pie-baking and showed her love and concern for others by baking them their favorite pies. Her family will miss their "Birthday Pies" as much as her smile and laughter.

"Annie", as many knew her, loved watching baseball on TV, going to lunch at Vaughn's with her friends once a month, and she loved cats, or "Kitties", as she would call them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, sister, Grandson- Jason Darrell Mellencamp, Granddaughter-in-law- Jennifer (Saville) Mellencamp, and many treasured friends.

Left to cherish her memory are Daughter- RaeAnn (Heumphreus) Mellencamp and son-in-law Darrell, Granddaughter Shelly (Mellencamp) Dow and husband, Doug, Grandson Scott Mellencamp and wife Micaela (Sunderman) Mellencamp, great grandchildren Bailey, Will, and Lane Mellencamp, and Jason, Jacob, and Jana Dow, brother-in-law Ferrell Stewart and wife Marge, and sister-in-law Mabel ("Sis") Casteel, along with many, many friends.
