Batesburg-Leesville - Joe Fincher Austin, passed away Monday, December 9, 2013. He was predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Mae Durst Austin. He is survived by a brother John N. Austin of Mission, Colorado and his sister, Margaret L. Marks of Greenville, SC; stepson, Steven J. Hite and wife, Rebecca; stepgrandchildren, Josh Hite, Elizabeth Hite, Steven Hite, Farrah Hite Rutherford and husband, Will; Amy Hubble and her husband, Darrin, Eric Aull and wife, Deanna and Michael Aull. Mr. Austin was born in Laurens, son of the late John N. Austin and Rosa Dell Sumerel Austin Marks. His stepfather was L.W. Marks. Mr. Austin attended Laurens High School where he was active in sports and attended Presbyterian College on a football scholarship. In his senior year he was elected the most outstanding Senior Athlete. He was employed as a Human Relations Manager with Burlington Industries for 29 years. He worked at the Batesburg Plant for 19 years and retired in 1989 when the plant closed. Mr. Austin was a member of First Baptist Church of Batesburg from 1970 until his death. He was an active member in the church, teaching Sunday School, serving as a Deacon and Trustee, and working on many committees and projects. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Batesburg. Burial will follow in Batesburg Cemetery.
