Charlotte Rothemeier married Henry Erbes, the couple having eight children in Appenheim. Charlotte and Henry became pioneers on the Illnois prairie, being the first of the clan to venture across the Atlantic. The family emigrated from the Fatherland in 1846. They purchased tickets in LeHavre, France aboard the ship St. Nicolas, which deposited them in New York on 28 April 1846. They arrived at the Adam Betz homestead at Perkins Grove on 20 May 1846. They purchased 411 acre homestead in north central Clarion Township, six miles west of the future city of Mendota.
