CHETOPA - Hubert E. "Curly" Mayfield, 84, of Chetopa died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at Oswego Hospital. He was born Jan. 15, 1921, in Holly, Colo., to Robert Lee and Beulah M. (LaFalier) Mayfield. He grew up in northeastern Oklahoma and attended school in Ottawa County. Entering the Army on Sept. 21, 1942, he served in World War II in Africa and Italy, most notably participating in the campaigns to retake Italy, including Rome, Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal, the EAME with three Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Meritorious Unit Award and the World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged on Nov. 12, 1945. He married Nadiene Beck on Feb. 6, 1943, and lived in the Chetopa area following his discharge from the Army. He farmed until 1955, when he moved into Chetopa. Once there, he built houses, worked in Blankenship's Hardware Store and for a short time worked at Kansas Army Ammunition Plant. She survives. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Masonic Lodge No. 73 of Chetopa and the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Sanderson and her husband, Bruce, of Oklahoma City; two granddaughters, Melissa Cavendar and her husband, Paul, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Amanda Pollock and her husband, Andrew, of Norman, Okla.; and a great-granddaughter, Madison Cavendar. He was deeply loved by his family and well thought of by the community. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. The service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa with the Rev. Jack Wilkinson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery of rural Chetopa. Military honors will be given by American Legion Post No. 147 funeral detail of Miami. Memorials to Disabled American Veterans may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, Box 346, Chetopa, 67336.
