Sir Winston Churchill was extremely fond of cats and had several. For his 88th birthday in 1962, Sir John Colville gave him a marmalade cat with a white bib. He was named Jock, and the cat became a favorite of Churchill’s. When Sir Winston died in 1965, Jock lived on at his country home, Chartwell, where he had the run of the house. The National Trust took possession of Chartwell, after Sir Winston's death, and the Churchill family asked that a marmalade cat called Jock always be in residence. After the death of Jock, he was interred on the grounds, and another marmalade cat, Jock II, succeed the original. The National Trust has ensured that the tradition continues to this day, the incumbent currently is Jock IV.
