Obituary for Harvey Woods

Harvey Raymond Woods was born in Fork Ridge, Tennessee on July 10, 1926. He was the son of the late Sterling Woods Sr. and the late Nora Bell (Jordan). In 1944, Harvey moved from Tennessee to Monroe with his brother to obtain work and establish a household for the rest of his family back home. Harvey would join the United States Army National Guard and serve his country honorably for three years.

He married the love of his life, the former Peggy Ann Fleeman, in Monroe on November 2, 1973. Harvey was employed as a Custodian for Mercy Memorial Hospital for many years and as a laborer for Monroe Auto Equipment manufacturing shocks for 47 years. Harvey worked hard to support his family. He served as a father figure to all of his siblings, and was very protective of them. Harvey was a go-getter and extremely organized operating the East Side Men's Club for many years until 2009.

Harvey was loving to all; friendly, generous to his neighbors, and very helpful to others. He was very strong-willed and could be stubborn in his ways and many knew not to cross his path. In his free time, Harvey enjoyed betting on horses, playing cards, and gambling.

Harvey Raymond Woods, age 87 of Monroe, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at home. In addition to his parents, his passing was preceded by his loving wife: Peggy Ann Woods; a sister: Irene Price; and five brothers: Arthur Woods, Sterling Woods Jr., Floyd Woods, Robert Woods, and Fred Thomas.

To cherish his memory, Harvey leaves his beloved sister: Trennia Ann Cole of Monroe; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may gather from 11:00am until 2:00pm on Friday, December 13, 2013 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185.
