Shirley A. Spence, 85, of Little York, IL, died 9:35 A.M., Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg. She was born November 20, 1928, in Aledo, Illinois, the daughter of Lee and Mary (Metzner) Brown. She was raised and educated in Viola where she graduated from Viola High School. Shirley married Chester "Chet" Spence on July 19, 1947, in Aledo, IL, and he preceded her in death on February 8, 2010. She first worked at the Telephone Company and later worked at Bowman Shoe Co, in Monmouth and Holmes Shoes in the Galesburg Mall. Those left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Connie Thomas of Little York and Linda Collins of Midland Texas, 8 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, one great great grandson, one brother, Fred (Janet) Brown of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, along with nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one daughter Trudy Spence, one son, Rick Spence, one sister, Lenora Martin and two brothers, John Brown and Marvin Brown. Graveside services and burial will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, December 13, 2013 in Alexis Cemetery, with Pastor David Dutton of the Little Cedar Presbyterian Church. There are no visitation or calling hours planned. Memorials may be left for the Little York Baseball Diamond. Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth is in charge of arrangements.
