Mrs. Anna May Powers of Essex, who was spending the winter at Dover Plains, CT, died at Sharon Hospital, Sharon, CT, Sunday, December 10, following a short illness. Anna May Townsend was born January 28, 1880, at Essex, the daughter of John and Annie Ryan Townsend.
William Powers, age 25, son of William and Hattie Powers married Anna May Townsend, age 25, daughter of John and Annie (Ryan) Townsend at Burlington, Vermont on March 1, 1905.
The 1920 US census shows William Powers (39) and his wife Anna May Powers (39) and sister-in-law Elizabeth Townsend (35) living in Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont. He was a steam fitter.
Widowed in August of 1924, Anna was 18 years postmaster of Essex, being appointed in 1932 and retiring in 1950. She had maintained her home in Essex and recently spent winters with Mrs. Violet Zimlinghous, a former resident of Essex, at Dover Plains. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Powers of Burlington, VT, Miss Gertrude Townsend and Mrs. Lynn Mather of Braddock Heights, MD. The remains reposed at the Hufcut Funeral Home at Dover Plains until the time of the funeral which was held at St. Charles Catholic Church, Dover Plains. Interment will be made in the family plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Essex, in the spring.

News was received this week of the very sudden death of Mr. Powers of Burlington, Vermont. His wife was one of our Essex girls, Mae Townsend, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Townsend. Their Essex friends extend their heartfelt sympathy in this sorrow that has come to them.
Sisters Anna and Elizabeth Townsend married brothers William and John Powers.
