Transcripts of Vermont vital statistics records and burial records list Chapin's birth and death as both 1785 - 1854 and 1784 - 1855. A death notice published in The Burlington free Press (Burlington, Vermont) May 19, 1854 confirms that he passed away in 1854. However, it states he died on May 5th; other sources indicate he died May 6th.

Chapin was an innkeeper in Townshend, then began a tanning business in West townshend with his brothers Levi and Henry. The business operated from about 1804 to 1834.

Chapin represented Townshend in the Vermont legislature 1834-1836. In "Collections Relating to the History and Inhabitants of the Town of Townshend" (1877), author James Houghton Phelps states "He is remembered forhis courteous bearing, stability, uprightness, correct opinions on business matters, and for his foresight and tact in executing his plans."

Chapin was a Deacon and financier for the Baptist Church and Leland & Gray Seminary in Townshend.

Chapin married Birsha Smith on March 13, 1809. They had eight children.
