Vernon David Holder, 94, peacefully ended an incredible life's journey here on earth on December 4, 2013. Believing in Jesus as his Savior, he has passed from death unto life. Vernon was born in Cumberland County, NC on August 25, 1919, the fourth of twelve children to Neil Jefferson and Anna Calcutt Holder. He married the love of his life, Pauline Hart, on June 1, 1943. Vernon served in the US Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. Having an entrepreneurial spirit and an encouraging wife, they ventured to Rocky Mount in 1947 building and opening Sky-Vue Drive In Theater. They built and opened Sky-Vue Skateland in September 1958. Vernon is fondly remembered for teaching many children and adults how to roller skate. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Hart Holder, three sisters, eight brothers, and his parents. He is survived by his son David Holder Jr. and daughter Denise Holder Watkins and husband, Larry; his grand children and their spouses, Amy and JE Hughes, David and Tammy Holder, Jarod and Katherine Watkins, Sean and Lauren Holder and Anna and Ronnie Kruger; and 4 great grandchildren. A graveside service will held 11:00 AM Saturday December 7, 2013 at Rocky Mount Memorial Park with the Rev. Joe Price officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 6, 2013 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM at Englewood Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Heritage Oaks Funeral and Cremation Services.
