Born in Hollis, Harmon Co., Oklahoma, J.W. "Red" Stacy played high school football for four years in Altus, Oklahoma and won the state wrestling championship. He earned a bachelor's degree in education at the University of Oklahoma, and planned to become a coach. In 1935, however, he was recruited by the Detroit Lions for $110 a game. He was a rookie tackle and guard when the Lions won the world championship that year. He played with the team until 1937 when he left to coach an amateur team in Honolulu. He married Ann Alberta "Bertie" Stewart in 1936 in Hollywood with comedian Joe E. Brown as best man. In 1940 he was called out of the reserves to active duty as a special services officer. He was at Hickam Field in Honolulu during the bombing of Pearl Harbor and saw action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After the war, he worked for American Factors, Ltd., a Hawaii-based grower. After retirement, he and Bertie moved to Palo Alto, California where she died in 1972. He married Virginia Lu "Ginna" McCoy in 1975, and they moved to Rocklin, California in 1990. In later years, after his red hair turned white, he preferred being called "Jim." He served on the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Chapter of the NFL Alumni in the 1980's. The Rocklin "Press-Tribune" featured a front page article about him on Super Bowl Sunday in January 1998, just three months before his death.
