FUNERAL SERVICES HELD HERE WEDNESDAY
Many Prominent Out of Town Relatives and Friends Present at Services
Mrs. Virgie Gage Armistead, widow of the late J. J. Armistead, died at her home in New Orleans, Monday, March 5, where she had made her home with Miss Kate Armistead for a number of years and was seventy eight years old at the time of her death.
Mr. Armistead came to Newton in the early '80's and lived here for a number of years. He was an outstanding citizen, serving as mayor, postmaster, and editor of the Newton Dispatch. After leaving Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Armistead resided in New Orleans, where he died in 1901.
Mrs. Armistead was born and reared at Quitman. She had resided in New Orleans since the death of her husband. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
The body arrived here Wednesday morning and was carried to the home of Mrs. F. C. Loper, a family friend. Short services were held at the Knights of Pythias Cemetery with Rev. J. L. Smith, pastor of the local Methodist Church in charge. Interment followed with J. D. Tidwell in charge of arrangements.
Pall bearers were M. S. Buckley, R. S. Majure, I. M. Dansby, T. H. Wilson, J. C. McBeath and E. L. Baucum.
Out of town, relatives and friends present were Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Kirkland, Mrs. G. Kirkland, Mrs. Hal Dabbs, Mrs. J. H. Fathree, Mrs. John Dabbs, all of Quitman ; Miss Ruth McPherson, Moorehead ; Miss Mary McPherson, Mt. Olive; and Misses Jennie Armistead and Mary Kate Price of Jackson.
