John Stewart Campbell was the son of Smith Campbell and Angelica Burns. He married Alice J. McKinney Patterson on August 9, 1886 in Chillicothe, Livingston, Missouri.

"John S. Campbell was born in Fairview township, Livingston county, Missouri, January 17, 1847. He had made this county his home practically all of the time since then.

He was a son of Smith Campbell, one of the earliest settlers of this county. Margaret Slater, his first wife, died in 1885. To this union four children were born, all of whom survive: Mrs. Lida Whiteside of Emmett, Idaho; Victor Campbell of Laramie, Wyoming; Mrs. S. D. Jenkins of Kansas City; and Mrs. Guy K. Fisher of Youngstown, Ohio.

In 1886, he wedded Mrs. Alice Patterson, who with one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Ridgway of Marceline, Mo., survive. The deceased is also survived by three brothers, J. M. Campbell and J. A. Campbell of Polo, Mo., and W. J. Campbell of this county; one sister, Mrs. Patterson of Greeley, Colo.; and two step-children, Mrs. Maud Wells of Kansas City and Mrs. Ollie Jones of New Cambria, Mo.

In the death of John S. Campbell, Livingston County has lost one of their most creditable and highly respected citizens. He was a friend indeed to all who needed his assistance and was always willing and ready to tender his services wherever needed. His presence will be sadly missed in the business, social and religious world." The Chillicothe Constitution-Tribune, May 15, 1912
