John James LaRoche and his brothers were prosperous planters of Toogoodoo. He served in Capt. Walter's Co. (Washington Art'y), SC Lt. Art'y. He enlisted at age 40 on Feb 1862 in Adams Run and served for a year. He re-enlisted in Oct 1863 and several months later was making salt for the Confederacy near Adams Run, SC.
He married lst, Susan Clement (d 1866) and with her had eleven children. After the war he married 2nd Sarah Margaret Jenkins. JJL is said to have been buried at Brick House next to his wife Susan but her grave is apparently not marked.
