DAVE EVANS DEAD; REAL ESTATE MAN
World War I Veteran, 59, In Business Here 35 Years, Native of Rockwood
Dave W. Evans, 59, combat veteran of World War I, who for 35 years had engaged in the real estate business in Chattanooga, died at his residence, 517 Young Street, last night after an illness of five months.
Stricken in July, Mr. Evans had been under treatment since, but his condition did not become dangerous until yesterday afternoon. Complications developed, bringing on pneumonia, which an attending physician said was the immediate couse of his death.
The son of Welsh immigrants, Mr. Evans was born at Rockwood, Tenn., July 15 1888. His parents, Evan Evans and Elizabeth Richards Evans, came to the United States in their youth and settled in Pennsylvania. They later moved to Rockwood, where they reared their family. In 1917 the young real estate man left a thriving business to fight on the front line with the First Division in France.
A sergeant in the Sixth Field Artillery, Mr. Evnas had five campaign stars to his credit. He saw action in the Meuse-Argone offensive and was at a number of other spots where American soldiers wrote a valorous history during that war.
Concussion from heavy artillery fire seriously impaired Sgt. Evans hearing and in his civilian life he used a hearing aid.
For 18 months Sgt. Evans was in France. He was wounded in action and gassed.

Wife survives

Before being sent overseas, however, on May 22, 1918 Mr. Evans married Miss Jessie Hood, a member of a prominent Chattanooga family, who survives him.
Mr. Evans was a member of the Chattanooga Real Estate Board for a number of years. As he grew older his hearing defect became more pronounced and for that reason he preferred not to belong to organizations. He did enroll in the Half-Century Club, however, and had membership in the American Legion and the Second Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Evans aided in promotion of a number of Chattanooga's residential subdivisions. He was an officer in the company which developed Dallas Heights.
For a number of years Mr. Evans also served as a member of the Hamilton county equalization board and he was frequently employed to make real estate appraisals.
Besides his wife, Mr. Evans is survived by a son, David William Evans Jr.; a daughter, Miss Betty Evans; a brother, John R. Evans; two sisters, Mrs. R. E. Marshall and Mrs. H. E. Payne, all of Chattanooga.
Funeral arrangements had not been completed last night. (Chattanooga Times, 9 Jan 1948, p. 11)
