Amelia Irene Bignar Johnson passed away on, Thursday, December 5, 2013 at home with her family at her side.
She was born to Murphy and Loyce Lambert Bignar January 11, 1931 in Hammond, La.
She is survived by her beloved husband and traveling companion of 62 years, Roy W. Johnson, Sr.
She was the mother of Roy W. "Hank" Johnson, Jr., Gordon R. Johnson, Mark R. Johnson (Karen) and Tami Amelia Johnson and grandmother of Mark R. Johnson, Jr. (Karen), Kramer M. Johnson (Hayley), Evan Murphy and Nicholas L. Johnson; great-grandmother of Madeleine Abigail and Emery Amelia Johnson.
She is survived by two devoted and lifelong friends- Beth Robinson and Kathleen Griffith.
She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers- Eddie and Albert Bignar.
A native of Hammond, La. and resident of Covington,La. for nearly 50 years.
Irene begin teaching 5th Grade in 1952, retiring from Covington Middle School in 1980. She held a Masters of Education degree from Southeastern Louisiana University and was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Retired Teachers Association of St. Tammany Parish in 2005.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Covington since 1967, enjoying her Sunday school classes, playing cards with friends, traveling and "Silver Slippers".
