U.S. Congressman. Moving to Paterson, New Jersey, in 1860, he engaged in the manufacture of iron, was member of the board of aldermen in 1882 and was Mayor of Paterson, (1885-89). In 1889, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first Congress, serving until 1891. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his manufacturing pursuits. He then returned to New York in 1897 and engaged in the management of his farm until his death at age 82.
