Rev. Melvin Phillips "Mel" Clough, was the son of Mordicus (Americas) Eugene Clough & Lou Jennings.

He married Martha Elizabeth "Mattie" Fryar, September 13, 1890 in Texas. To this union four children were born. 1) Lou Ann Clough 2) Clarence Isaac Clough 3) Curtis M Clough & 4) Cecelia Clough.

Mel and his wife Mattie came to Wanette area soon after 1910 and resided in Eason. They came up from Texas to Eason Twp. most likely because Mattie's sister, Mrs. Mary "Eva" (Fryar) McAfee lived here.

He would speak or preach to whomever would invite him. In April, 1920, Reverend Clough of Wanette, He was a member of the Wanette Lodge No. 166 and spoke on "Oddfellowship" to a good crowd of very interested Odd Fellows members at a special meeting and banquet in their hall.

Rev. Mel Clough preached at the Old Jefferson Church in Adell during the 1930's. He married several couples in the area. He and his wife Mattie lived in the Eason area near Wanette. This church which no longer exists stood at Rd. 138 N/S and 136 E/W.

They both are found on the 1920, 1930 and 1940, Eason, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma census'. He was a farmer.

Clough's Early Day Settlers
Mr. and Mrs. M. P. Clough have lived in Oklahoma 29 years. They moved here from Frost, Texas to Oklahoma in 1910, and are now living on Route 2, Wanette.
Mrs. Clough was born in Arkansas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Fryar. Her parents moved from Arkansas to Texas when she was 10 years old. She met Mr. Clough, and they were married, September 30, 1890. They are the parents of four children — two living and two dead.
The two children living are Lou McCullough, at Pampa, Texas, and a son Clarence Clough, at Houston, Texas.
Friday, September 13, was the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Clough.
They have eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Their daughter, Lou McCullough, of Pampa, Texas, and her son, J. M., her baby girl, Martha Lou, and her two married daughters, Anna Lois Janzer and two children of Borger, Texas; Juanita Hunt and baby of Borger, Texas, visited them the last week in August. Pictures of four generations of the family were made while the children were at home.

After the death of his wife Mattie died in 1949, and Mel moved back to Texas with his daughter Mrs. Lou McCullough, where he died in Amarillo at the age of 93 years.

Clough services to be announced
Mel P Clough, 92 ,former Wanette resident, died Friday in Amarillo Texas.
He was a retired farmer. Clough lived in the Wanette area for many years and had been making his home in Amarillo with his daughter. His wife, Mrs. Mattie E. Clough, died Aug 1949.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lou McCullough, Amarillo. Burial will be in Wanette cemetery.
Services will he announced by Gaskill funeral home.

Services Monday for Wanette man
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Monday in the Wanette chapel for Mel P. Clough, 92, a longtime Wanette resident, who died Friday, in Amarillo, Texas.
Burial will be the the Wanette cemetery, Gaskill's is in charge of arrangements.
Clough, who lived in the Wanette area for many years, had been residing in Amarillo with his daughter for the past few years. His wife, Mrs. Mattie E. Clough, died August 8, 1949.
He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Lou McCullough, Amarillo.
