Film director and screenwriter. He had a rich and varied career, where he directed the greatest actors of French cinema. He was best known for his classic French farce "La Cage aux Folles" (1978) which was remade in the United States as The Birdcage in 1996. Other of his films were "Oscar" (1967) with Louis de Funes and "My Uncle Benjamin" (1969) starred the Belgian singer and songwriter Jacques Brel. He produced television works until his retirement in 2005. He was awarded the Prix René Clair by the Académie Française.

Cause of death: lung failure.
