U.S. Congressman. After studying medicine in Vermont, he was licensed a physician and proceeded to practice medicine in Preston, New York. During the War of 1812, he served as surgeon of the Chenango County Company, New York Volunteers. After the war, he returned to his medical practice, was clerk of Chenango County (1820-21) and a member of the New York State Assembly (1821-22). In 1835, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress, serving until 1837. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of medicine until his death.
