In the Fall of 1851, Edward, his parents and siblings emigrated to the United States of America, setting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1857, the family moved to Adams County, Wisconsin, and in 1866 to Lodi, Columbia County, Wisconsin. Edward attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
After college, Edward was licensed as a minister in the Lodi Circuit, Madison District of the Methodist Episcopal Church on September 4, 1869. Shortly after, Edward and his parents moved to State Center, Marshall County, Iowa. Edward taught school in the Winter, Spring and Summer of 1871 and then entered the Upper Iowa Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. On November 2, 1871, he married Martha Patten Price in State Center, Marshall County, Iowa.
Edward was first stationed at Blairstown, Iowa for one year. Then at Rockwell, Iowa, and at close of second year was ordained Deacon. Edward was next stationed at Fredericksburg, Chickasaw County, Iowa, where he remained for the next two years. It was in Fredericksburg where his first son, Albert Edward Hoskyn, was born on November 20, 1873.
Edward was next ordained Elder, and then his next appointment was in Gilman, Iowa, in the Fall of 1875. He preached for two years; at Gillman and in the Spring of 1877, he purchased the newspaper, the Gilman Record, and changed the name to the Gilman Dispatch. His second son, Frederick Brown Hoskyn, was born in Gilman on December 24, 1877. Edward was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in Company E, 1st Independent Battalion of Infantry, Iowa National Guard in 1878.
Edward's next recorded appointment was in Southern California and the family moved in 1886-87. He pastored several churches, including churches in Beaumont, Banning, and Highgrove in 1894. His wife Martha was initially upset about moving to Highgrove, however she was later happy as this was where both their sons met and married their wives.
In 1900, Edward and Martha were living in Colton, California and in 1910, they were living in Riverside, California. In 1920, they lived in Los Angeles California. Edward died in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California on January 2, 1928. He had just purchased a new automobile and was driving home. His car was hit at a busy intersection and he was killed in the accident. Edward is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale.
