Joseph served as a Private First Class, 22nd Marines, 6th Marine Division, U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

He resided in Winooski, Chittenden County, Vermont prior to the war. He enlisted in the Marines on June 7, 1944.

Joseph was "Killed In Action" on Okinawa during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.

On his parent's headstone his name is noted as "Romeo J." instead of "Joseph Romeo".
