Samuel was the son of Samuel & Mary Williams Gano. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted, as a Pvt., in Co. H, 35th Regt., Indiana V.I., on December 3, 1861 and was mustered out on February 13, 1863. He, then, enlisted in Co. K, 117th Regt., O.V.I. on June 20, 1863. He was mustered out of this regiment on August 12, 1863 and was transferred to Co. K of the 1st Regt., O.V.I., H.A., on August 12, 1863 and served with that regiment until the end of the war. The men of the 1st were mustered out on June 22, 1865 at Camp Chase, Ohio.
Samuel returned to Xenia, Ohio and married Rosa E. Morris, the daughter of Adeline (maiden name unknown) Morris, on January 15, 1867. They were the parents of Ottaway "Otto" Gano. Mrs. Gano passed away, prior to 1876.
He married Margaret E. (nee Haverstick) Swartz on July 27, 1876, also in Xenia, and they raised Margaret's son, George Swartz, and his son, Otto Gano, to adulthood. In addition, the couple were the parents of Frederick, Clifford, Ralph, Eva and Mabel Gano. Mrs. Gano passed away in 1896.
Mr. Gano did not marry again and he finished raising their children to adulthood. Throughout the years, he supported his family by working as a tailor.
