When Paul first arrived in Durham, he lived with the Boles family. Joan's father owned the Texaco station on the Midway, which Paul ran for several years, until Bob Perry purchased it. During his time at the gas station, all the local children began referring to Mr. Tilley as "Paul". While they were always comfortable addressing him so familiarly, they were always too polite to say "Joan", so the Tilley's became "Paul" and "Mrs. Tilley."

Joan and Paul love to travel, particularly enjoying having lots of traveling companions. Paul's favorite trip was an Alaskan cruise/land tour that lasted for 19 days and allowed them to fly to Kotzebue, above the Artic Circle, where they were personally welcomed by the man whose face is painted on the Alaskan Airways planes. They have traveled on a 14-day bus "farm tour" in Europe, meeting with growers in Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Bavaria, and Switzerland which, on occasion, meant being given meals in private homes.
