July 26, 1926, a beautiful female child, Elizabeth, was born to the union of Matthew and Callie Barnes in Pittsburg, Penn. Elizabeth peacefully entered eternal rest Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at Manor Care of Kenosha.

Liz, as she was so fondly called, was educated in the Chicago Public Schools and was a graduate of Du Sable High School. The depths of her informal education extended well beyond high school, and her knowledge of the world would leave you speechless. She loved to write and had impeccable penmanship.

After many years of service, she retired from AMC but she did not retire from life. She felt life was a gift from God that should be honored and lived to the fullest. She was full of joy and her humor was contagious.

Liz was one of the original members of the old Coleman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church on 50th Street in 1937, before the present site was purchased on 30th Avenue. She served in many capacities such as Church Treasurer, Steward Board, Lay Organization, Missionary Society, and was founder of Colemans Birthday Club. Two weeks prior to her transitioning to her heavenly resting place, she made her final visit to Coleman. Liz loved her Coleman family and she loved Pastor Francis, who always made her smile. She was also a former member of the Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star Scottish Rite.

Liz leaves behind to cherish her wonderful life a sister, Geraldine Ross; one nephew, John Ross; one great nephew, John Ross, Jr.; and a host of church member and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Hatcher.

A Homegoing Service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Coleman Chapel, AME Church, 4111 30th Avenue. Interment will follow in Sunset Ridge Memorial Park. A visitation for Elizabeth will be held at the church on Saturday, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances to the Coleman Chapel AME Church Education Wing Fund would be appreciated as it was very dear to her heart.
