James married Mary E. Keys July 2, 1860 at Norfolk, Litchfield County, Connecticut. In 1850 he lived in New Haven Connecticut the third child of four. His parents were John and Mary Dewell. His father was born in 1797 and worked as a Scythe Maker. His mother was born in 1804. His siblings were Mary E. born 1829, Sarah R. born 1835, and Martha born 1843. In 1880 he and Mary had 5 living children. Edward Humphrey had died in 1877. About this time he was working as a Wholesalle Grocery Dealer. The five were Jenie K. born 1862, Charles born 1864, James Jr. born 1871, Robert P. born 1874, and Franklin born 1878. In 1897 James Dudley became the Republican Lieutenant Governor until 1899, under Governor Lorrin A. Cooke. In 1900 while living at New Haven City Ward 8, the same children lived with them, but yet Charles and Robert were no longer with them. The letter you see was his handwriting to a law firm in Charleston, S.C. It was concerning a schooner he owned named "Dewell".
