John W. Melhorn, 82, of Mount Joy passed away peacefully at the Masonic Villages of Elizabethtown on Wednesday, December 4, 2013. He was the caring husband of Sandra Sloat Melhorn. He is survived by his children, Michele married to Gary York of Candia, NH; John, "Mike" married to Wendy Gerber Melhorn , Astin married to Kensey Abbott Melhorn and Allory Melhorn all of Mount Joy. His five grandchildren, Megan Cowette, Aaron, Andrea, Thatcher, and Gibson Melhorn will miss his daily presence.

A business entrepreneur, John founded Melhorn Sales, Service and Trucking Company, of Mount Joy in 1958. The business serves as a major supplier and hauling firm for the poultry industry. Since founding the business, Melhorn Sales has continued to grow, serving clients throughout the United States and Canada. John had a strong work ethic and continued with the day to day operations of his business until his retirement in 2010. An active member and contributor to the Mount Joy business community, he was involved with the Chamber of Commerce, Main Street Mount Joy, the Mount Joy Rotary Club and PennAg Industries.

John was a 1949 graduate of the former Mount Joy High School and later served in the US Navy. He currently attended LCBC Church, Manheim and enjoyed the company of his many friends, especially the daily gathering at the "Table of Knowledge" at Gus's Restaurant. Between his favorite hobby called "work", he enjoyed tractor and car shows and a rare vacation. Most importantly, John made many special acquaintances during his life that will certainly miss his friendship.

Born in Mount Joy, he was the son of the late John E. and Ruth Wolgemuth Melhorn. In addition he is survived by his brother Robert E. (Virginia Nagel) Melhorn of Mount Joy, and sister Doris Jean Scraggs of Bent NM. He was preceded in death by a sister Bette Jane Wingate.

A Funeral Service honoring John's life will be held at LCBC West Wing Auditorium entrance on Route 772, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim PA on Monday, December 9, 2013 at12:00 Noon . Interment to follow in Kraybill Mennonite Cemetery, Mount Joy. A viewing will be held from the Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy on Sunday from 4 to 7 PM. John's family will greet friends on Monday morning at LCBC from 10:00 to 11:45 AM. Please Note: The casket will be closed on Monday morning.
