John Humphreys was born in Iowa City,Johnson County, Iowa to Thomas J. and Elizabeth Rowland Humphreys. The Humphreys family moved to Gage County, Nebraska in 1877 where John grew up and attended school. John attended Pleasant View, District 81 country school through the eighth grade. His father, Thomas J. was instrumental in building this school, as there was no school in this area. His father passed away when John was a young man of 25 and stayed on the family farm helping his mother with farming. John married Anna Roderick on June 15, 1910 and took his new bride to a new farm house that he had built for her, three miles South of Wymore, Nebraska. To this union three children were born. John lost his wife, Anna, after only nineteen years of marriage and had to raise his teen age children by himself. John was a prosperous farmer and did very well even during the depression years. He was affiliated with the Royal Highlanders Lodge. John stood 5 feet 9 inches, had sandy color hair and blue eyes, and always had a mustache. He was well known in the community and served in many community organizations.
