DAVID O. WINFREY

David Outcalt Winfrey, 89, of Smithsburg, Md., died Nov. 27, 2013, at Reeders Memorial Home, Boonsboro, Md.

Born Sept. 4, 1924, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Davis B. and Edna S. Winfrey.

He was a 1941 graduate of Martinsburg High School. He also attended Shepherd College, and graduated from West Virginia University in 1945. He earned several graduate degrees, including a Bachelor of Divinity from Drew Theological Seminary in 1953, and a doctorate from the University of Maryland in 1966.

He was minister of the Poolesville, Md., Methodist Church (1954-1955), and a professor at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va. (1958-1967), and at Hagerstown Junior College from 1968 until his retirement in 1986.

He was a member of Washington Square United Methodist Church.

David is survived by his wife, Jane Teare Winfrey, whom he married July 20, 1957; a son, David L. Winfrey of Smithsburg; a daughter, Carolyn Gillette and her husband, Bruce, of Wilmington, Del.; three grandchildren, John Gillette and his wife, Jenell, and Catherine and Sarah Gillette; and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Brockman S. Winfrey and Charles R. Winfrey.

Services will be held Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Washington Square United Methodist Church, 538 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, Md. The Rev. Jerry Lowans will officiate. Burial services will be at Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, on Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, at 2 p.m.

The family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Maryland Food Bank, Western Branch, 220 McRand Court, Hagerstown, MD 21740; or to Washington Square United Methodist Church, 538 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

The family is grateful to the staff of Manor Hall at Reeders Memorial Home for their loving care of David.
