Joyce Hovey Engelke

Johnson City: 91, passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at James G. Johnston Nursing Home. She was born June 27, 1920 in Sanford, NY to The Reverend Luke and Pearl Warn Hovey. She graduated from Avoca High School, Avoca, PA. She began college at Penn State and graduated from Cornell University in 1941. She attained a masters degree from New York University. She was head dietician at NY University Hospital and later worked as a dietician in several hospitals and nursing homes in the New York City area. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Paul Engelke; her sister, Betty Richards; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Marian Engelke, her nephews David Richards and Adelbert Hovey. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, George and Dorothy Hovey of Mifflinburg, PA; her sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Wendell Richards of Syracuse, NY She is also survived by nephews Roger and Lisa Richards of Endwell, NY; Doug and Karen Hovey of Mifflinburg, PA; Scott and Ramona Hovey of Austin, Texas; Steven and Jayne Richards of Syracuse, NY; Jim Richards of Syracuse, NY; and nieces Janet and Darryl Eubank of Houston, TX and Carol and Tom Chekan of Syracuse, NY as well as five grand-nephews and six grand-nieces. She is also survived by her husband's two nephews, George Engelke and Roger Engelke. She was currently a member of the Endwell United Methodist Church and formerly a member of the Maine Federated Church, Maine, NY where she was very active and First United Methodist Church, Englewood, NJ where she sang in the choir, served as church treasurer and was very active in United Methodist Women. She was also active at the district and conference level of The United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women in the former Wyoming Conference and the former Northern New Jersey Conference. Her family expresses their appreciation to the staff of United Methodist Homes - Hilltop and James G. Johnston Nursing Home for their love and care for Joyce over the last eleven years. Her funeral service will be held at the Barber Memorial Home, Inc., 428 Main Street Johnson City on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 11:00 am. with calling hours preceding the service at 10:00 am. Chaplain Lea Harding of United Methodist Homes will officiate. A committal service will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Candor, New York. Memorials may be given in Joyce's memory to The Children's Home of the Wyoming Conference, 1182 Chenango Street Binghamton, NY 13901.
