Elias was a baker by trade and owned a grocery store, which his wife Mary took charge of. He invested in a coal mine and later became superintendent of it. He joined [The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints] in 1849 and made plans to take his family to America.
Two years after his wife [Mary Williams] died in 1854, he married his wife's widowed sister [Hannah Williams Hopkins]. They left Wales in 1856 . The last part of their trek was through snow. Elias helped bury some of the handcart pioneers who were ahead of them. In Wales he had paid for a home in Salt Lake but when he arrived he found there was no such place. He finally bought a farm in Little Cottonwood where they lived until fall, when he moved his family to Spanish Fork.
After his second wife [Hannah Williams Hopkins] died, he married again [Mary Jones]. He bought an entire city block and built a five room adobe home. He was a financier and amassed a great deal of property. At the time of his death he owned 11 city lots and several hundred acres of land, besides a large herd of cattle and several teams. He paid for the transportation of six or eight families from Wales to Utah. He was known for his honesty, genial disposition and willingness to help those less fortunate.
