Roger Dwaine Merritt, 73, of Akeley, MN died on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the Essentia Health Services Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Roger was born on July 28, 1937, the son of John and Betty (Foley) Merritt in Danbury, Wisconsin.

He enlisted into the U.S. Navy in 1954 serving until 1961 and was a veteran of the Korean War. He lived in Two Harbors, MN from 1949 to 1954; California from 1961 – 1975; Two Harbors, MN again from 1975 to 1986 and moved to Akeley in 1986, where he has resided since.

He was united in marriage to Glenna R. Oleson on March 12, 1986 in Las Vegas, NV. He owned three businesses while living in Two Harbors, and he worked as the manager of the Akeley V.F.W. from 1987 until 1991. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends and watching western movies. He enjoyed traveling and he has spent 15 winters in Arizona. He was a member of the Akeley United Methodist Church in Akeley.

He is survived by his wife – Glenna Oleson Kerwin Merritt of Akeley, MN; Stepsons – Thomas Kerwin of Akeley, MN; Jerry (Kim) Kerwin of Monrovia, MD; Donald Kerwin of Akeley, MN; Bruce (Karen) Kerwin of Savage, MN; Robert (Davelyn) Kerwin of Winterhaven, FL; 10 step grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren. 3 brothers – Robert Merritt of Two Harbors, MN; Randy Merritt of Schroeder, MN; Roy Merritt of Surprise, AZ; 5 sisters – Elaine (Joe) Rollins of Silver Bay, MN; Peggy (Doug) Muklebust of Park Rapids, MN; Kathleen Kramer of Akeley, MN; Linda (Bill) Kuchta of Two Harbors, MN; Mary (Terry) Simola of Iron, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his former spouse – Rose.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the United Methodist in Akeley, MN at 1:00 PM with Pastor Duane Gebhard officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Military Honors will be provided by the Star of the North Marine Corps League Honors Team. Military Taps will be by Raymond Vaadeland. Inurnment will be at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
