On December 31, 1861, William mustered in as a sargent in Company H, 2nd US Sharpshooters. He was promoted to First Sargent December 1 1862, then commissioned to Captain. William re-enlisted in February 1864, and was wounded in May. On October 27, 1864, William was reported missing in action at Boydton Plank Road. He died of the wounds received there.
Some records, including "Vermont in the Great Rebellion" (1869) by Otis Frederick Reed Waite, list October 27, 1864 as William's death date.

taken prisoner & carried to Richmond
where his remains now lie. He suffered
agonizing pain but murmured not to
the will of God.
As a sincere christian a beloved citizen
a faithful soldier he is missed in each
step through life.
