Burton Bush


Burton B Bush, 83, of Greeley died Tuesday, March 26, at the Hospice of Northern Colorado Inpatient Unit.


He was born March 2, 1913, near Valentine, Neb, the second son of seven children of Frank Henry and Mary Edith (Bucy) Bush and moved with is parents to Colorado in 1914 in covered wagons. The family settled in the drylands 11 miles south of Roggen, moved to Maxwell, N.M. in 1923 and returned to Prospect Valley in 1926. Mr. Bush attended his first school in a one-room white school house three miles south of the Prospect store. He went to the 10th grade in Prospect Valley. He left home in 1931 and worked around Wheat Ridge until called to serve in the Army in 1944.


Mr. Bush served in the Pacific Theater from New Guinea to Yokohama, Japan. He was in charge of a troop train in Japan, and another from Seattle to Fort Logan. He also had charge of all records of that move.


He became the recruiting sergeant for the Army Reserve in Phoenix and was reduced from a temporary rating of master sergeant to sergeant first class. Because of his successful recruiting, he was promoted to master sergeant with a permanent rating.


In 1950, he was recalled to active duty in the Korean War. He served one year at Dugway Chemical Proving Ground, Tooele, Utah and received his third honorable discharge from the Army. He was awarded a Bronze Star among other ribbons.


In 1937, he married Ruth Sheldon. They had three children.


In March 1946 Mr. Bush returned from his service and worked as a cabinet maker. He had learned the trade at Carney Lumber and Mill in Denver, where he was working when he was drafted. The family moved to Grand Junction in 1958. He and Ruth divorced in 1966. In 1968 he moved to Greeley and worked as a carpenter at the University of Northern Colorado. He retired in 1978.


On Oct 21, 1980 he married Elsie Huskey. They lived in the Greeley area.


Mr. Bush was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He also was a member of the Elks Lodge in Hotchkiss, Greeley-Evans Moose Lodge 909, BPOE Lodge 809, Cabinet Makers Union 2052, Carpenters Union 1095 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Pioneer Post 2121.


Survivors are his wife, Elsie H of Greeley; two daughters, Patricia Carpenter of Salida and Linda Ball of Phoenix; a son, Jerry Thomas Bush of Lander, Wyo; a stepson, David Huskey of Sumner, Wash; two sisters, Lucille Meagher of Denver and Betty Ferraro of Lakewood; two great-grandchildren. A sister, Ruth Alsdorf, a brother, Walter L Bush and a step-son, Dr. Gerald Schmidt, are deceased. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by VFW Pioneer Post 2121.
