Banker, broker; born New Orleans, La., 1847; son of William A. and Penelope A. (Oldham) Violett; attended private schools; married, New Orleans, La., Olga, daughter of William Quentell, and Corinne Baquie. Member firm of Atwood Violett & Co., members of New York Stock Exchange, Cotton Exchange, Coffee Exchange. Served In Confederate Army at Mobile, 1S64; transferred to Military University of Alabama, at Tuscaloosa. where battalion of cadets had an engagement, 1865; surrendered as a member of Army of Lt. Gen. Richard Taylor of Confederacy, and was paroled by Mayor-Gen. Canby of Federal Army, 1S05. Was for many years closely identified with National Guard of Louisiana, and upon retirement, was lieutenant-colonel in command of one of its prominent Military Organizations. Democrat. I believe this memorial is for Atwood Violett as the dates match his dates and not that of his Father, William. It's possible that Atwood's first name was also William.
