John William Henry Hill was the son of Major Thomas Hill (1789-1857) and Fannie Baptist (1789-1853).He was born 25 April 1814 in Culpepper, Culpepper County, Virginia. He married Mary A. Bates 20 June 1837 in Marengo County, Alabama.She was the daughter of Jehu (John) Bates (1795-1876) and Janet Barnes (1794-1851). John W H Hill was the brother of Confederate Lt. General Ambrose Powell " A P " Hill, one of General Lee's top generals.


John and Mary had 7 children. They were: Francis Janet "Fannie" Hill, Thomas John Hill, Mary Eugenia Hill, Laura Alice Hill, Margaret V. Hill, Eliza Florence Hill and John Edward Hill.


Mary's mother Janet died in 1851 in Marengo County.Janet's father Jehu sold the property that he owned in Marengo County as well as the house he had built for Janet to George Barney. He later moved to New Wakefield Washington County, Alabama with his second wife, Margaret Cox. John and Mary Hill were residing in Washington County in 1860. Their daughter, Laura had married Rufus Bruce and was residing in Louisiana. John and Mary both died in New Orleans, LA. in 1867 during the peak of the Yellow Fever epidemic of that year. John and Mary are both buried in thr Bruce Family crypt in Lafayetter Cemetery Number 1, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. Daughter Laura Alice Hill Bruce and niece Elizabeth Rice Skinner Bruce are also buried there.

On Friday, September 13, 1867, at 12 o'clock M., of yellow fever and paralysis, JOHN W. H. HILL, of Culpeper Courthouse, Va., aged 53 years.
