Cardelia Beatrice Gardner was the daughter of Samuel Miles Gardner and Rachel Rebecca Burkett. She was born in Augusta, a rural community in Houston County, Texas. Miles and Rachel had four children:
Cardelia Beatrice Gardner born in 1904
Nanie Lee Gardner born about 1908
Ira Duke Gardner born in 1910
Henry Martin Gardner born in 1912

Cardelia's father died in January of 1919 at the age of 39 during a wide-spread flu epidemic. After his death, the family struggled to continue their livelihood farming.

On October 15 1920, at the age of 16, Cardelia married Drew Wilkins Thomas, the son of William Alexander Thomas and Mary Jane McCain. Drew and Cardelia tried farming, but they couldn't make it. So, sometime before 1930, they moved to Angelton in Brazoria County and Drew went to work at the Clemens Prison Farm near Rosharon. He worked there as a prison guard for close to 50 years, and Drew and Cardelia lived their remaining years in Angleton.

Drew and Cardelia had six children:
Arthur E. Thomas born in 1922, died in 1965
Emma Duie Thomas born in 1924, died in 1989
Odessa Lee Thomas born in 1926, died in 2002
Ira Jerril Thomas (also sometimes named Ira George) born in 1930, died in 1962
Jessie Beatrice Thomas born in 1934, died in 1992
Drew Henry Thomas born in 1937, died in 1981

Cardelia died in 1976, at the age of 71. Drew died in 1979, at the age of 84.
