George joined Company G, 10th Regiment, Vermont Volunteers on August 8, 1862. He died from disease at was then known as Camp Grover, at Offutts Crossroads, Maryland. In ""Bully for the Band!": The Civil War Letters and Diary of Four Brothers in the 10th Vermont Infantry Band" (McFarland, May 14, 2014), editor James A Davis indicates that 25 members of the Vermont 10th died from typhoid fever in camp.

Offutts Crossroads was located at what is now known as the intersection of Falls and River roads in Potomac, Maryland.
