Lena Brock Speer was the matriarch of the Singing Speer Family. Lena and her husband G.T. forged the way for Southern Gospel Music. Even before Lena married G. T., she was surrounded by gospel music. Her father, Charles A. Brock, was one of the South's leading music teachers and he taught his children to sing at an early age.

Lena was born in the Ruby community in Cullman County. After her marriage in 1920, Lena began a musical journey that can only be termed legendary. She sang soprano in the original Speer Quartet, supporting Tom's desire to make a career in gospel music. Then, with her husband and their four children, she became a mainstay in the Singing Speer Family for the next four decades.

Lena Speer's beautiful voice combined with that of her husband to thrill audiences across the country with heartfelt performances of such songs as "Heaven Will Surely Be Worth It All," "Won't We Be So Happy," and "I'm Building A Bridge."

Noted for her genuine Christian spirit and love for gospel music, "Mom" continued traveling with the Speer Family right up to the year of her death.
