Minnie Lockney, 95, a longtime resident of Grant County, passed away Sunday at Fort Bayard Medical Center. She was born Feb. 9, 1899 to Willis Robert and Sophronia (Henslee) Chandler in Washita County, Okla. As a child she traveled by covered wagon from Oklahoma to Hope, N.M. On Oct. 21, 1920 she married Glen C. Lockney in Weed and soon after they moved into a cabin on the Black Range, where they had a goat ranch. They next moved to Fort Bayard, and both became employees of the Veterans Administration at Fort Bayard Hospital. They later purchased property in Silver City and retired from their government jobs. When Mr. Lockney went to work as a driller at Santa Rita, Mrs. Lockney became a homemaker. She was a regular member of the First Baptist Church in Central, and in the 1960s did mission work and was a pianist at the Baptist Mission in Pinos Altos. She was among those who started the Silver Heights Baptist Mission, which later became Indian Hills Baptist Church. She enjoyed the outdoors whether she was searching for Indian relics or collecting pottery in the Grant county area or gathering seashells for her collection on the West Coast. She was a loving and caring person who by example taught her family to take care of one another. She is survived by a son, Sam Lockney and his wife, Claire of Yucaipa, Calif.; two sisters, Ada Lee and Florence McBride, both of Silver City; two grandsons, Kirk Lockney and Brian Lockney, both of Yucaipa; and numerous nieces and nephews, including R.L. chandler and his wife, Charlene of Silver City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen C. Lockney on Aug. 8, 1968. Services will take place Thursday, which would have been her 96th birthday, beginning at 1 p.m. in the Curtis-Bright Funeral Home chapel. Interment will follow in Memory Lane Cemetery
