Mitchell Leon Spencer was born to Floyd James and Ada Bell (Cordray) Spencer on October 18, 1938, Oklahoma. Mitchell was called Leon by his parents and siblings.

Mitchell was certified 1/32 Cherokee through his mother, whose family had settled in Oklahoma when it was "Tahlequah, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory."

Mitchell enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at the age of 18 and served until retirement. He was stationed all over the world, including Thailand, Vietnam, France, and the Philippines.

He married Lorilee Marie Forgue in 1958 and their first child, Terry Lynn, was born the following year. They were blessed to adopt to additional children while stationed in Washington State, Timothy Patrick and Jennifer Louise.

Mitchell and Lorilee separated and subsequently divorced in 1991. During that time, Mitchell was diagnosed with lung cancer. After spending a year beating lung cancer, he had a heart attack December 1992. Mitchell lived with his daughter, Terry Lynn, and her family from 1991 to 1993. In 1993, Mitchell moved back to Muskogee, Oklahoma. On November 28, 1994 at the age of 56, he had a heart attack and died at home in his bed.

Mitchell Leon Spencer is buried in the Ft. Gibson National Cemetery, not far from where he was born and raised.

He is survived by ex-wife Lorilee Forgue, daughters Terry (Spencer) Arnold, Jennifer(Spencer)Cauthon, and son, Tim Spencer. As of 2011, he has ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
