Our beloved Mother and Grammy, Barbara Jean Helm (88), passed away in Collinsville, Oklahoma on September 16th, 2022.

Barbara and her identical twin sister, Anne, were born on November 11th, 1933 in Long Island, New York. The girls were born before ultrasounds and their parents were not prepared with names for the two girls. Since the hospital referred to them as baby A and baby B their mother Jean decided they would be Anne and Barbara. Barbara and Anne have always been as close as two sisters could be. They had a special bond that was filled with love, loyalty, and lots of fun.

In 1946 Barbara, Anne, and their parents, Walter and Jean Haas, relocated to Collinsville, Ok. Although nervous about beginning a new school in a new state, with very different accents, the girls would flourish in Collinsville. They would go on to become the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the Collinsville class of 1951, with only a half of a point difference in their grade point averages. This competitive nature continued throughout their lives and spread to their keeping count of the number of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren belonging to each of them.

On June 1st, 1952, Barbara married Robert "Bob" Helm at St. Therese Catholic Church in Collinsville. They began growing their family the following year with the birth of their first daughter, Theresa. Bob and Barbara added five more children to their family in the years following; Mark, Catherine "Cathy", Regina "Jeannie", William "Bill", and Joseph "Joe". Barbara was a loving and devoted mother who adored her children. However, she adored them most for rewarding her with grandchildren, and later great-grandchildren. There is no title that she loved more than "Grammy". Barbara looked forward to meeting each new grandchild and showered each with a great amount of love and devotion. Baking was one of her many gifts in service to others. She spent countless hours baking cookies, cinnamon rolls, her famous homemade pizza, as well as many other family favorites she would use to spoil her family. Barbara was extremely thoughtful and remembered every birthday and anniversary, and would be sure to send a card, a text, or make a phone call to show her love.

Barbara worked as a cashier at Rexall Drug in Collinsville until around 1978, she then moved on to work at the local bank. She enjoyed visiting with customers and always had a smile to give and kind words to share. She loved to celebrate holidays with her work family, especially if costumes were involved. Barbara continued working as a teller at RCB bank (formerly American Exchange) in Collinsville until her reluctant retirement in 2003.

She was strong in her faith and was a devoted member of St. Therese Catholic Church, where she taught Sunday school classes for 25 years. Barbara had a servant's heart and spent her life in service to others. Maya Angelo said it best:

"A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again."

Barbara is survived by her children; Mark Helm (Dee), Cathy Lawson (Scott), Jeannie Walker (David), Bill Helm (Lisa) and Joe Helm (Tonya) all of Collinsville. She is also survived by nineteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, her sisters; Anne Guilifoyle (Don) of Colby Kansas, Susan Cartwright of Tulsa, OK, and step-sister Elaine Blaise, of Florida.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Jean Haas; Her husband, Bob; and her daughter Theresa.
